Prasad Jonalagadda, speaking from Toronto, posed a thought-provoking question regarding the cosmic changes that occur during Pralaya—the period of dissolution in Hindu cosmology. Dr. Venkata Chaganti responded by explaining that time in Hindu philosophy is segmented into four Yugas (ages): Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali, which together form a great cycle known as a Mahayuga. Each Mahayuga consists of numerous cycles, and the timing of Pralaya is significant within these cycles.
Dr. Chaganti elaborated that after each cycle of destruction, a new creation begins. He highlighted that during Pralaya, all existing celestial bodies, including stars and planets, undergo complete dissolution. However, this destruction is followed by a rebirth where, according to Vedic texts, the universe is recreated in accordance with the original blueprint established by the Creator.
This cyclical pattern suggests that even after destruction, a process of renewal commences, continuing the eternal rhythm of existence. Dr. Chaganti emphasized that during these times, while the physical world may perish, enlightened beings (Moksha souls) and the Supreme Being (Paramaatma) transcend this cycle, observing the unfolding of creation anew.
In response to concerns about the existence of life at the end of an age, Dr. Chaganti indicated that during transitional phases between Yugas, remnants of life persist, especially those aligned with Dharma (righteousness). The continuity of Dharma ensures that certain enlightened beings remain to guide and revitalize the world post-destruction.
Thus, Pralaya serves not just as an end, but as a pivotal moment for transformation and renewal, underscoring a profound understanding of life and existence in the cosmos. Through this lens, one can appreciate the cyclical nature of time and the perpetual dance of destruction and creation that characterizes our universe.
